How to Water Your Orchids So the Roots Don't Rot

Due to the gorgeous blooms, the variety of species, colors, and sizes, one of the favorites among houseplants is the Orchid. Like other plants, the correct growing conditions are required for the orchid to thrive. One of the key growing conditions for the orchid is giving the right amount of water. You must research the required water conditions for your orchid because the requirements vary between the different species.

Orchids are typically found in the tropic zones of our planet. These areas receive a tremendous amount of rain and it is usually very humid. If fact, the ideal humidity level for most orchid plants is 80%. A room kept at 80% humidity would be extremely uncomfortable for most people so you will need to find other strategies to keep your orchids healthy and happy.

One easy way to humidify your orchids is to provide them with a constant supply of water. Purchase a deep saucer that is wider than your orchid pot and fill it with some pebbles. Set your orchid pot on top of the pebbles and then fill the saucer with water. You don't want the water to touch the orchid pot. If it does, you will likely overwater your orchid plant. The saucer of pebbles filled with water will create a zone around the orchid plant that has a higher humidity than the surrounding room.

Overwatering is probably the biggest mistake people make with their orchids. Generally we assume that when the soil in the pot is dry, the plant needs to be watered. This is not true when it comes to orchid plants. Although the potting bark appears dry, it actually holds a lot of moisture. A good rule of thumb is to water your orchid plant a little once a week or every other week. You want the potting bark to dry out between waterings. In their native habitats, some species of orchids grow on the trunks and branches of trees and it is normal for their roots to dry out before being given water again.

Orchids need to be fertilized sparingly as well. Most garden shops in your area will carry orchid fertilizer. Create a routine for watering and fertilizing your orchid plant according to its needs and you will enjoy these exotic plants for a long time.

A thriving orchid plant must be given the proper care including the right amount of potting bark, water, fertilizer, and sunlight. By learning the needs of your orchid species, you will find growing orchids to be easier than you imagined and you will have beautiful, exotic plants to enjoy and show to your visitors.
