Using a pendulum for divination is generally easy to do. Since a pendulum is only able to answer Yes / No questions. The learning process is usually quite short. More time, in fact, is required to crate a finely tuned pendulum then to learn how it is used. The art of using a pendulum for divination is ancient, some accounts say that it was used by ancient Egyptian civilizations.
Preparing a pendulum for divination is a tedious process. One must first cleanse the talisman, whether store bought or made by the reader, and the entire preparation should ONLY be performed by the person who will be using the object. Some forms of preparation entail meditation and constant handling of the item, while others involve elaborate purification rites. It is not unusual for a cleansing spell to be intoned during the physical cleansing, which is done in a glass or metal dish of pure water. After this step, the object must be left exposed in the light of the full moon for one whole night. Before the sun has risen, the item should be covered in a protective cloth and shielded at all times from direct exposure to the sun.
As you've noticed, the process for using a pendulum for divination, takes a lot of time and patience. Once the pendulum is prepared, the reader must become aligned, or tuned in, to the object. Using a pendulum for divination is a solitary reading, and the object will only work for the person who has cleansed and tuned it. To become aligned, hold each end of the string, or chain in your hands, and bring the closed fists together. Allow the object to swing to a complete stop. It is sometimes recommended to repeat this process several times, and I've always thought three was a nice powerful number to use.
Once that stage is completed, we will tune ourselves to the motion of the object. The choices for its motion are: side to side, forward and back, clockwise, and anticlockwise. Think of a question to which the answer is definitely "yes". Repeat the process of holding the chain and touching fists together, and pay attention to which motion the pendulum makes. That motion will always represent a "Yes" answer. Think of a "no" question, and repeat the process a final time. This will always be "No". In order to change this, the entire cleansing process must be undergone.
