Blackheads, called open comedones, are either a yellow or black plug on your skin. They are not caused by dirt, but form when excess sebum (oil) gets in your pores and are then oxidized by exposure to air. This oxidation causes them to harden and they turn yellow or black.

Pimples, on the other hand are called closed comedones, and because the pore is closed, the oil, dead skin and bacteria do not oxidize and usually become infected as red blemishes or pimples.

  • Cleanse your face again after you remove the blackhead to prevent infection.
