How to Use Facebook Chat

Do you know how to use Facebook chat? Well, don't worry. It's not that complicated. You don't even have to install any software to use this feature to socialise with your friends. That's because the chat interface is built right into Facebook. You can easily access it from any page on the site.

So do you want to know how to use the chat feature to socialise on Facebook? On any page of the site, look at the bottom of your screen and you will see a little box on the right hand side with the silhouette of a person, a green dot showing that you are online and the word chat with a number in parentheses next to it. That number is the number of friends currently online that you can socialise with.

Now that you've found the box, what do you do next? Well, now you need to learn how to send a message. To get started, just click on the box. A list will pop up showing which of your friends are online. Friends who are online and active will have a green dot to the right of their names. Those who are on the site but not really doing anything are shown as idle. The icon for idle friends looks like a little gray moon. Now click on the name of the friend you want to send a message to.

Are you ready to start chatting? Good, we're almost there. When you click on your friend's name, a separate box pops up to the left of the main chat box. At the bottom of that box is a place to type your message. Go ahead and type something in and press enter. Now you know how to send instant messages to your friends on Facebook.

How do you know when your friend writes back? The message they send will appear in the top part of the box right underneath the message you sent them. In this way, you can socialise by sending messages back and forth for as long as you want. And if you get sidetracked working in another window, Facebook will make a popping noise whenever a new message comes in so you don't lose track of the conversation.
