In growing roses, our first consideration would be the location. The place that we are looking for to plant roses is a place with enough sunlight to offer. At least 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight every day is needed to plant and grow roses. There are other kinds of roses that may do well with just 4 hours of direct sunlight. It is advisable to have a sheltered position, away from trees and shades of other structures, open to direct sunlight, as already mentioned, for at least 6 hours of the day. The area for your rose plant must be cleared from roots of other plants to avoid later problems for your plant.
It is said that roses have a healthy appetite, so they need to grow in a fertile and rich soil. The soil or your rose plants must contain just the right amount of clay and also enough amount of sand. Good soil should hold the mold in your hand but must also crumble easily. Acidic soil which has a large amount of limestone or chalk should be avoided. Manure or animal waste is also a good natural fertilizer to mix with your garden soil. Rose plants only like to be mixed with other roses or other non-invasive plants. You can also grow garden roses in any soil healthy enough to be able to produce other plants or vegetables. This can be obtained in well drained, deep rich loam. You can improve stiff clay soils by adding just the right amount of sand, humus, and plant food.
After finding a good and suitable location and a cultivated fertile soil for your roses, at this point you can now estimate the depth of the hole to which you will place your rose plant. For starters, uncover a hole on the ground larger than the bulk of the rose's pot, where the root system is located. The climate of the place that you live in will also tell you the dept of the hole for your rose plant. Deeper hole should be done in colder areas. You can also refer or ask other rose owners or growers in your area what is the proper depth for your rose plant. Try also to loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole which is very beneficial for the plant. Likewise, in the bottom of the hole, you can place compost, enough amounts of bone meal rich in phosphorous, mild and stimulates healthy growth of the roots. After placing the plant into the hole, you have to spread out the roots slightly, so they don't cramp much in one place. It is now time to refill the hole and you must see to it that the soil stays around the roots. Just before covering the hole with the last amount of soil needed, you have to water first the roots. After placing the remaining soil back to fill the hole, firm the soil slightly. Finally, water the rose plant at this point too.
