Advancements in hair styling are going on all the time - even as we speak. We can be thankful for these advancements, that have led us to having more options when styling our hair and creating new looks as and when we feel like it. For curly haired girls, it is quite often the case that we long to have straight hair - maybe just for one night - a special occasion or simply in the name of experimentation. There is one revolutionary tool that can transform even the most unruly of hair to poker straight, sleek and shiny in no time at all - the straightening iron.
Even the straightening iron has enjoyed a fair bit of evolution over the years - becoming more powerful and yet less damaging on the hair itself. Still, I wouldn't advise using them on a daily basis as they can dry out the hair and even cause hair loss in extreme cases. Don't let that put you off though from using them occasionally - once a week would be fine when you also equip yourself with a bottle or two of protective spray products to counteract the damage caused by heat application.
Here is my step-by-step guide to straightening your hair with straightening irons:
1. First of all, wash your hair with shampoo as you normally would and condition. If you don't already use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner than I would recommend it for being the best choice in fighting frizz and for taking the best care of curly hair.
2. Dry the hair with a towel by gently blotting it - just enough until the dripping stops. Once all the excess water is out, use a wide-toothed comb through the hair being gentle not to pull or snag.
3. Now would be the best time to apply some protective spray or cream to the full length of the hair. There are products that are made specially with straightening irons in mind - browse the local beauty store or the web for suitable products.
4. Now for the best effect you should separate the hair into three sections. From the top of your ears and above, gather the hair and pin it out of the way. Then half the hair that is remaining and once again pin the upper half to the side.
5. Starting with the underneath section, dry the hair using a hairdryer and diffuser attachment. Tame hair with a large, roll brush as you dry. Take a few inches of hair at a time until it is completely dry. Continue this same action with the middle section and the top.
6. Once the hair is dry, you should separate it once more as you did in step 4. In the same order, glide the iron over one inch segments of hair from the root down to the tip. Once you have done with the underneath, continue with the middle section and finally the top section.
7. How does it look? Quite a transformation no doubt. For extra shine you could now apply a small amount of gloss or serum - working it in the palm of your hands first before stroking through the hair.
And that is all it takes these days to turn curly into straight. Just remember not to get into the habit of over styling hair - better leaving it to special occasions or really bad hair days.
