How to Stop Pop-Ups?

Expert Author Mike Arrowsmith

They slow down users from viewing the content they want to see, typically offer nothing to the surfing experience, and often times are advertising websites that are of no interest to the surfer. In many cases, they advertise adult web sites that are offensive to the user. So how can someone remove these scourges of the Internet from their online life?

There are three primary tools at an Internet user's disposal to help eradicate these pop-ups. The first is the easiest to use of them all, because users already have it. It is the Internet browser.

All of the major Internet browsers - IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera - have built-in pop-up detection that catch many of the pop-up ads out there. In these cases, the browser will alert you to the fact that it has blocked a pop-up window. You then have the option of opening the pop-up, if it turns out that the browser blocked a window from opening that you wanted to have open.

The second tool available is an ad blocking program. These programs are typically built as extensions or plugins to your browser. Rather than working as a separate program like the typical anti-virus software, these ad blockers integrate themselves into your browser of choice, stopping most pop-up windows from opening. They have the added benefit of also keeping many ads from appearing inside the pages you are viewing in the main browser window.

Finally, on most popular operating systems, you can build a hosts file. A hosts file is a list of domain names and the web site address that you want requests to access that domain to redirect to instead. Typically a user will direct an offending domain name to 127.0.0.1, the local loopback address.

By using these tools, it is possible to bring an end to pop-up windows ruining your Internet experience.

After extensive lab testing the best tool to remove pop-ups from your PC is STOPzilla. The software is free to try out and is automatically updated, click here for more information.
