How to Stay Resilient in Affiliate Marketing Even As Your Merchants Fall One by One Like Ten Pins

Expert Author Gary T

In tough economic times, affiliate marketing can be a "recession proof" business if you know how to cover your bases. While merchants may fail due to high overhead costs and poor demand in certain markets, affiliates have a better bargain. Why? Because as an affiliate marketer, you can "change partners" anytime you want!

But in order to do that, you need to have some solid anchors attached to your "affiliate marketing business ship" so to speak. What are these anchors or business considerations you need to keep in mind? Here are some:-

1. You need to have at least 5 merchants in any niche you are promoting

Say you are interested in the weight loss market and you have identified the fat burning niche. Great. You then go out and promote your favorite fat burning supplements. But you need to remember to promote at least 5 merchants. Why? Because you can never tell what will happen to your favorite merchant. They may just decided to close shop or sell their business one day.

If that happens, at least you have the others to help you put food on your table. Ok, you are probably wondering how to promote 5 merchants at the same time right? Easy, do a product comparison and rank them accordingly. If one fold, move the one below up a notch.

2. Have many affiliate websites in each niche you promote

Having more websites is always better for your affiliate business. The more the merrier. Combine free ones with paid ones. The idea is diversify your risks as websites can lose traffic or be attacked or crash anytime.

3. Have more than one web host

Every met a bad hosting company? If you have, you will know they can kill your business by destroying your credibility and your search engine ranking. So you need to have many websites on different hosts. So if one host crash, at least you have the others to help earn some money to pay for your children's school fees or your rent.

4. Diversify your traffic sources

If you are relying on Google for all your traffic, your days as an affiliate marketer are numbered. Why? Because it is a known fact that Google can destroy your business in a wink of the eye. Don't get me wrong, traffic from Google is great. But they are as trustworthy as a liar when it comes to search engine traffic. Be sure that your website also gets traffic from social media sites, word of mouth marketing, classified ads, ad networks and other traffic sources.

5. Save a percentage of your earnings

Like the ant in the famous Aesops fable "The Ant & The Grasshopper", you need to out aside some money when the going is good. This will help you survive the down swings that will inevitably come your way.

Remember the above 5 anchors. They could save your ship from shipwreck.
