Starting your own quilting business is always an attractive option financially if you are already passionate about it. However, before venturing into the business, there are several important factors that you need to take into consideration.

Source of start up capital

Although a small quilt shop does not require you to have a huge start up capital, you still need probably a minimum of few thousand dollars to set up one.

Your start up capital would most likely be spent on buying sewing machine, initial materials to make quilts if you choose to sell your own design, rental, insurance, license fee, signage for the business and etc.

It would be good if you can devote some of your savings for business purposes, else you will have to seek for your seed capital either from bank or relatives.

Start it from home or rent a workshop

You have to decide whether you want to start your own quilting business from home or rent a workshop nearby your home. In the first case, you will be able to save some operating overhead.

However, you need to allocate enough places for you to store your materials and for quilting activities. By doing it at home, it is very likely that you can do it big because of the limited resources.

Part time or full time

If you don't have the intention of starting your own quilting business full time, then you have to prepare to sacrifice your rest time during weekend at least for the first year of operation.

This is in view that most of the craft fairs are held during the weekend and in order to attract your customer base, it is always advisable to participate in craft fairs particularly if you are just starting out. Furthermore, craft fairs are a good place to display your quilting products.

There are many resources online that you can find on how to start a quilt shop, just spend some time browsing on the internet and you will realize that there are many other things that you have to consider before getting your feet wet in this business.
