How to Speed Up Composting
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

One of the biggest problems with composting is that it isn't a particularly fast process. This can be a little frustrating if you want that compost in order to put it on plants. But there are some things you can do to speed up the process of composting.

Take a look at your composter before you do anything else. Is it allowing enough air to get into the waste? Without the proper ventilation, nothing will break down. It will just sit and get moldy, which isn't really what you're going for. A little bit of mold is to be expected, but it shouldn't take over your bin.

Another thing you need to make sure of is that you are adding enough water to the bin. Without water, your bin won't be a hospitable environment for the bacteria that are required for wastes to break down. At the same time, you don't want to drown the compost either. Finding the proper balance may take some time, but you will get it. The best way to start is adding just a little water, then adjusting it from there.

When you are adding waste into the bin, make sure it is in small pieces. Entire banana peels and large chunks of potatoes will break down, but the process will be speedier if you chop them into little pieces.

Finally, something you may want to think about is using worms in the compost. Some people find this idea gross, but it really is the best way to get quick results. On top of how fast the worms do their job, you also end up with better compost because it is filled with nutrient-rich vermicompost, the waste that worms create.

By making a few changes to how you are creating compost, you can really speed up the process.
