How to Solve Cryptograms Part 4B, Using Pattern Recognition (More TH Words) to Solve Cryptograms

Expert Author Frank Ernhart

Recognizing letter patterns within a cryptogram is one of the keys to deciphering them. In the previous article we covered "THE" and and "THERE" and how to detect these words when encrypted. There are many other longer words containing "THE". Among 4 letter ones are: THEM, THEN, THEY. Among 5 letter words a common pattern emerges in the words "THERE" and "THEIR". Encrypted these might appear as "UYPVP and UYPKV". The letter pattern is helpful, but also the use in a sentence should help to confirm the deciphering of these two words. Other words containing "THE" are many: THEM, THEN, THEY, THESE, OTHER, MOTHER, BROTHER, ANOTHER, BOTHER, THEREFORE, THERBY, and more. If the cryptogram contains both "THE" and any of these words, it represents another clue to help solve the whole puzzle.

The word "THE" and "HE" are clues that help, as are the word "WITH" which contains "TH"
Other words containing "HE", such as "HERE, WHERE, WHEN, WHETHER, WHENEVER, WHEREVER, and more are also all clues to help solve cryptograms.

You may have noticed the letter "E", the most used letter in the alphabet also provides clues. Whenever you see the encrypted word "XPJPV, it is usually for "NEVER", and if you are lucky enough to see the "RJRV" in the same cryptogram, you should recognize the words "NEVER, and EVER quite easily.

Other commonly used words with "E" are: "RPVP, and YPVP", which are "WERE and HERE".
