How to Become a Top Scorer
Shooting and scoring is what makes basketball fun. Who wouldn't want to swish a last-second jumper to win the game, or hit a pair of free throws with 2 seconds left on the clock to seal a victory. A great shooter will lead the team in scoring, receive recognition from fans, players, and coaches, and possibly earn scholarship offers.
If you are a serious basketball player and want shoot a basketball perfectly, there are several techniques and training methods that can be of great help. All great shooters share the same fundamentals that allow them to consistently make a high percentage of their shots.
Here are the key pointers that will help you shoot a basketball perfectly:
1. Keep your body square to the basket
If you keep your feet, body, shoulders, and head square to the basket, your shot should also be in line with the basket. It is impossible to develop a consistent, high-percentage jump shot without being square with the basket.
2. Hold the ball properly
The ball should be held by your fingers, not on the palm. The pads near the tips of your fingers are the best spot to hold the ball. The non-shooting hand should hold the ball on the side loosely.
3. Know where to look while shooting
Look directly at the rim and keep your eyes on it throughout the shot. Never follow the arc of the ball with your eyes after shooting. I have always aimed for the back of the rim, but the important thing is to be consistent with your aim.
4. Stay squared up and in alignment at the point of release
Your shot should start out squared up with the basket and also finish the same way. Here is a test you can do to see if you are squared up properly at the point of release: Go up for numerous jump shots from many different positions, angles, etc. Right at the point of release, DO NOT SHOOT THE BALL, let go with your non-shooting hand and come back down to the floor. The ball should remain in the shooting position, perfectly balanced on your fingertips, and your feet and body should land facing square to the basket.
5. Create the proper arc
Shoot the ball at an approximately 45-degree angle to maximize height and distance. Remember, do not follow the arc of the shot after the release. Keep looking at the rim.
6. Follow through properly
The wrist should snap at the release. At the end of the shot your arm and hand should be pointed directly at the basket and your fingers should be pointing down to the floor.
These basic fundamentals will help you shoot a basketball perfectly. I am 50 years old and still shoot lights-out and lead my team (of 20 and 30 year olds) in scoring. You can be the leader on your team if you follow these tips and develop your perfect shooting technique.
