If you're trying to get a handle on your monthly expenses, software budgeting can help, but you will still need to do a little background and paperwork. For one month, keep all of your receipts and those of your personal family members. Gather all of your personal bills and bank statements, pay stubs and other sources of income.

You Need a Budget to Control Home Spending

You will need all of the above mentioned items, whether you are doing all of the work with pencil and paper or using a budget software program. The advantage of software budgeting is that once the program is set up, it can keep a running track of your monthly expenses and compile reports to let you know how you are doing. It can also help you stay focused on your goals, like saving for a down-payment on a house or the kids' college education.

That month's worth of receipts will allow you to identify and possibly correct problems. If you have a personal expense of $10 at Starbucks every day, consider buying a coffeemaker. It would pay for itself in less than a week. After that, you could put the daily savings directly towards your future finance household goals.

If your spouse is spending $20 a day eating out, consider brown-bagging. It will be better for your personal budget finance and will likely improve your health. Fast food is full of calories, but low on nutrients.

Fixed vs. Variable Home Expenses

Some monthly expenses are fixed, such as your rent or mortgage payment and your Internet service. Others are variable, such as your utility bills and possibly credit card payments. The amount that you spend on groceries, entertainment and gasoline is likely to vary from month to month as well. But, that month's worth of receipts will give you a starting point of your monthly budget.

From there, software budgeting tools can help you see how your home spending varies from month to month. Keep a basket or tray by your computer. Get in the habit of entering your receipts every day. Some finance budget software tools can be connected to your financial institution, so that you can download information daily. If you and your spouse use your debit cards for most purchases, this will cut down on the number of receipts that you need to keep track of.

When you start putting your home on a budget, if you find that your monthly expenses exceed your family's monthly income, you've got a problem to tackle. In some families, entertainment expenses take a big chunk out of the monthly budget. So, that's the first place to cut back.

Software budgeting can help your family's financial health and secure their future. Keeping monthly budgets will save you thousands of dollars a year. Set goals for your family spending and stick with them.
