How to Replace a Damaged Section of Your Carpet

Expert Author Ed Raine

Working on a spot on your carpet with water, club soda or special spot removing products may do the trick in removing it, but not always. If the spot is too tough or there is a burnt place in your rug or a tear, then you might want to patch the carpet. You can do this on cut pile rugs but not on looped pile rugs. For the latter, calling a professional to fix the situation is the right thing to do.

First you need a piece of carpet matching the one you have. If you are the kind that saves leftovers from when installing different things in your house, like tiles or carpets, then you surely have replacement material. Keeping the leftovers is a very good idea. Cutting a piece from under the furniture is another solution. Some tools will also be needed: utility knife, straightedge, carpet tractor and hot glue gun.

Using the utility knife and the straightedge to guide it, cut out a square out of the carpet around the damaged area. Leave a 2"-3" border around the stained or burnt spot. Work your way between the fibers and try not to cut the padding from underneath. The cut piece is now a template for your patch. Cut a same size replacement piece using the cutout one as a model. Take the glue gun, apply glue to the edges of the patch and then set it into its place. You should know that laying the gun on its side can damage its thermostat, therefore, when in use, keep the gun in an upright position. When setting the patch, guide the glue into the edges of the rug and the backing. The carpet tractor is a tool that will hide the seams and blend the carpet fibers together when rolled over the area where the edges of the patch and the rug meet. Rolling the carpet tractor over the seams of the patch is the last move you have to do.
