Ignition switch of a car engine can be operated only with help of a key, known as the ignition key. It is not possible to move the car without it. However, at times, you may have to replace this key for numerous reasons, such as damage of the switch, key theft, or improper functioning of lock cylinder. Usually, it is advisable to get in touch with a professional mechanic to replace the key. Here are a few tips and guidelines to follow in order to replace your car's ignition key:
1. Make sure you are well equipped with the essential key replacement tools, including a small screwdriver, key replacement assembly, and an adjustable wrench.
2. Next, cautiously disconnect the battery's negative terminal to avoid the risk of being electrocuted during the process.
3. The upper and the lower steering columns should then be unscrewed to be able to detach the car's steering wheel from its slot. This can be done by carefully lifting the central cover and unplugging the wire of the horn.
4. Next, make sure all the wiring associated with the windshield wiper and indicator signal is disconnected before you remove the spacer sleeve out from the wheel.
5. Finally, remove the screws and pull out ignition switch from its place. Get a replacement switch from a local automobile shop in exchange for the original, damaged one.
6. Insert the newly purchased assembly into the original cylinder and reconnect all the wiring in the right fashion. Screw the switch back in its initial position. Also, put the windshield and indicator signal wiring back in place.
Once the new ignition key is successfully installed in the car, you can reconnect the battery terminals and try if everything is functioning normally.
