How to Receive Federal Grants Through Central Contractors Registration (CCR)

Registering in the CCR enables the U.S. Federal Government to recognize your organization or business as a prospective vendor or provider of products or services. Then, your business can be given consideration for grants and contracts.

Below are the steps necessary for an American business to apply in the Central Contractors Registration (CCR) system. The online application must be filled in by a company officer or an authorized agent such as your grant writer.

1. Have your Duns number on hand to enter into the system. If you don't have a Duns number call: 1-866-705-5711.

2. Then, go to the Central Contractors Registration's website and start registering your business into the CCR system. (See link below.)

3. Follow the list on the right of the online application entitled the Navigation Menu.

4. Go to General Information. Enter your legal business name. That is your business name as known with the IRS.

5. Go to Corporate Information. Enter your business's annual revenue. This can be found in the company financial statements or on the business tax returns.

5a. Enter the type of business you operate. This is the legal entity in which your company operates. It can be a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation for-profit, or non-profit organization. If your organization has a non-profit designation, enter "tax exempt" here. If your organization doesn't fall under any of these categories, enter "other".

5b. Party Performing Certification, is only for companies certified from the SBA. Most companies applying and receiving grants will not fill out this category. Just enter N/A here if your business is not SBA certified.

6. Click the Goods and Services section on the Navigation Menu. Enter the NAICS Code. The NAICS Code is the North American Industry Classification System. It identifies your business activities and the type of services and products your business delivers. Federal government agencies search for companies by this number to see if a business meets their grant or contract offering needs. Go to (See link below.) to find your business's NAICS Code. Enter as many codes as possible that relate to your business, your products and services. Choose as many as appropriate to improve your chances for qualification, and offers to receive grants and contracts.

6a. Choose your Product Service Codes (PSC). PSC's are used to identify the services your company supplies to the government and are similar to old Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. For PSC Wizard, go to the PSC Wizard. You can choose up to ten.

6b. Choose your Federal Supply Classification (FSC). The FSC's are used to identify the products your company is able to supply to the government and are similar to old Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. You can choose up to ten.

7. Go to Financial Information in the Navigation Menu. You need to enter your Tax ID #, your bank's routing number and account number.

8. Click on the Points of Contact. You'll need to enter the business's official contact names, address, and telephone numbers of people that are designated to offer information about the business.

8a. Here you will also select a password containing nine digits or more. The MPIN will be used to access systems such as Grants.gov, ORCA, and PPIRS, which are partner applications.

9. Next, go to Proceedings. Answer 3 questions regarding if you have applied to any Federal organizations, if you have an active Federal contract, and finally, if your business has been subject to any criminal proceedings, fines or penalties within the last 5 years.

10. Go to Compensation in the Navigation Menu. Enter the Compensation to the Executives of your business.

11. Go to IRS Consent. Authorize the IRS to validate your business's legal business name and Tax ID#.

12. Finally, in the Navigation Menu of the CCR online application, your Duns information needs to be verified as correct by you.

13. Your business is now registered. Within 3 to 5 days you will be fully integrated into the CCR system. You will receive an email acknowledging the completion.

If you answer any of the questions incorrectly, you may lose consideration with Federal Agencies. Consider hiring a grant writer with a strong background in business consulting to help you succeed. Grants are available for all types of businesses.
