How to Provide Your Teen With a Healthy Body Image

Your baby girl, 14 years old is asking you how to put on your makeup. You get excited and show her all of your tricks that you use for sultry lashes and rosy cheeks. Your in awe that your little girl is asking you about makeup. She's growing up.

The next day, she asks you to show her how to shave her legs. You show her the swipe patterns to cut the course hairs the closest to her skin and she's excited to have this new, hairless look. The day after that, you walk into her room and she's prancing around her room, wearing your high heels and looking like a young woman. She notices you and her face is instantly flushed. You know it's time to have, "the talk."

When girls her age begin to enter this stage in their lives, they need to understand that their bodies are changing and will continue to change, drastically, over the next 5 years or so. Their hips and chest will get bigger and they'll eventually grow into their adult shape. With all these changes occurring so quickly, many girls feel like their shapes aren't what they should be. You want to make sure your daughter never feels like that. You start off the talk by enforcing the importance of inner beauty and the importance of the people in your life who are able to look inside someone and see this inner beauty. Anyone who is going to judge somebody for an outward appearance is not someone whose opinion you should waste time caring about.

She asks why she is so short and not as stick-thin as all of the girls she sees on television. Your heart breaks that this thought has even crossed her mind, because she is by no means overweight and you explain to her that the women on television and in magazines aren't always real. Explaining the tricks of air-brushing to your teens will help them understand that many of the shapes their sifting through in this month's issue of US Weekly are air-brushed; especially advertisements. A good way to show your teen exactly what this means is by getting on the internet. Google "before" and "after" air-brushing photos and you will have a solid case to show.

Lastly, you know that there are all kinds of 'fad' diets circulating your teen's school and you want to ensure she knows that it is not healthy to partake in such a trend. Explain to your teens the importance of eating a well-balanced diet, especially during your adolescence because that is when your body needs constant nourishment. Teach your children to make healthy choices and to eat energy-rich foods. If their body remains well-nourished then they are less likely to have mood swings caused by hunger and they will stay mentally and physically balanced. The most important thing to stress to teens is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Good intentions are the most attractive quality someone could have. Also, that the people in real life are just as beautiful, if not more beautiful, then the women on the magazines inside and out.
