This is something that you should always have your computer and monitors plugged into. Don't make the mistake of ruining your computer because you didn't want to spend $10 on this type of protection.
Some power strips are also backup battery supplies. These are even better since your desktop won't immediately shut off. These normally provide you with 15 minutes of power. This is better than having your computer just shut down. Even if your hardware doesn't feel the surge of power, having it shut off immediately can cause software problem and sometimes problems with your operating system. Get a surge protector with battery backup.
If you see a major storm coming and aren't going to be using your computer, shut it down and unplug it completely. If it's not plugged in, there is no way that a power surge will ruin your computer.
Be sure that you are backing up your files on your hard drive. Surge protectors can technically fail. You need to protect your computer's data by making regular backups.
