How to Obtain a Free Credit Report

Expert Author Julia Kabaki

First of all, what is a credit report? It is a document that contains the person's history of loan payments, such as those for credit cards, auto loans, and mortgages. Lenders use these credit reports to gauge if they can still grant additional credit to the person involved, and the interest rate which they will charge the loan.

It is stated in the 2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act that every American possesses the right to obtain free credit report every year coming from the three major credit bureaus. These bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. However, do not expect your credit report to come knocking at your doorstep every year. Of course you need to request it first. There are three ways to do it.

First of all, you go to their website and check out a copy of your free credit report. Remember that you will not be able to access your credit score with this free report.

If you are not the online type you can also call a toll-free hotline. Call 877-322-8228 to obtain your copy.

You can also do it manually, that is, by sending a form. Get an annual credit report request brochure available from the Federal Trade Commission. Fill out the request at the back of this form and send it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, Georgia, 30348-5281.

You can also do what most people do and get it from a credible credit company. Most credit card companies offer free credit reports and also a free trial to try their monitoring services. Monitoring your credit is beneficial because it gives you a chance not only to improve your credit rating but also fight and prevent identity theft. Identity theft is on the rise and as the experts say, if you can not measure it, you can not control it. You are the only person that can protect yourself from identity theft and other fraudulent activity. Financial experts nationwide agree that monitoring your credit is one of the best things that you can do to insure you are able to achieve dreams such as buying a car, a new home or even paying for your own or your kids college.
