Candle making activity has been around in centuries. Last 1992, soy candles has been invented by Michael Richards with the use of soy candle wax. And the day when Richards invented the soy candles brought impact to the candle making industry.
One day, Michael Richards wanted to find a way to substitute beeswax because at that time, beeswax was so expensive. Beeswax is all natural so he was looking for a cheaper alternative of beeswax which is also came from natural ingredient. Richards then tested different natural plant waxes and finally end up with vegetable wax which came from 3 types of oils: hydrogenated soy, palm and coconut oil. He then combined soy wax with beeswax to create an inexpensive soy candle. That's how soy candle wax came to be; all thanks to Michael Richards.
From then on, soy candles gain its popularity in the industry. More and more people around the world are using soy wax in making their candles instead of using paraffin wax. Why? I don't know. (*laughing) Just kidding! Because using soy wax has a lot of advantages aside from it is cheap and all natural. The benefits of soy is that it last longer than paraffin candles, easy to clean up with hot soapy water, produces less smoke and can distribute more flavor.
I know you are so excited to make your own soy candle. So, let's start. But first we need to have all the supplies needed in making soy candle. Don't forget your soy wax, mold, wick, double boiler, color dye and scent.
To make your soy candles quick than others, I have a secret to share to you. Gather all the material before you actually make you candle. Oh! Does it need to be a secret? I bet you know that already. It's always a standard to gather all materials when doing something not just in candle making.
Okay. Prepare your mold and wick. Glue the wick in the center of the mold. That's right. Now, melt your soy wax in a double boiler. If you don't have a double boiler, just look around the kitchen and you'll find one as substitute. Heat it up for about 160 degrees temperature. To know the temperature, you can use a thermometer. Always take a look on the heat source. It might burn your wax if it is too hot. If you wanted to use scent and color, then you can add up color dye and scent. Make sure to remove the mixture from the heat source to add the color dye and the scent. Be careful in buying color dye and scent. Some of these products are flammable. Ask the store attendant to guide you when you bought one of these products. And also, make sure that the color dye and scent is compatible with your soy wax so you won't waste your money. When you haven't decided how dark and how soft the color of the wax, the secret there is you pour is little by little until you reach the desired color. It also goes true with fragrance. Pour it little by little until you reach the desired scent. Oops! That's a secret! I think.
Now you have completed the mixture, slowly pour the soy candle wax into your mold, slowly and carefully. That's right. You got it right. Set aside your candle for it to cool. You can put the candle in the refrigerator to cool it faster.
And now, you're done. After your soy candle is finally cool, enjoy its beauty by lighting it up. Or you can also give it as a gift to someone. I hope you enjoy knowing more about your soy candle and making it as well.
