How to Make Money Online - List Building - N to Z

Expert Author James Gladwin

Do you find building your list difficult? Are you finding it hard to get started? well, often this is because there is a deluge to advice that is overwhelming. So here is a simple alphabetical primer to cut to the chase and get started. elsewhere I've covered topics from A to G, and another article covering topics from I to M. So let's begin with...

N which is for Niches, and niche marketing. So - what is a niche? Well, it's a portion of a market. So instead of offering cleaning services, a company might offer wooden floor cleaning services. When it comes to Internet Marketing, a niche is a specific, targeted market that appeals to a specific, targeted group. Instead of writing a web marketing newsletter, you offer a web marketing newsletter for plumbers, or electricians in Chicago. The more you can focus on a niche and build your list around that, the more likely you are to find online success/

O is for Offer. What offer offer are you going to make to a visitor to your web page that will be so attractive that they will exchange their email address in return? Gone are the days when it was easy to build a subscriber list. These days customers know the score, and expect a freebie that is worthwhile. So stager clear of recycled PLR material, or an eBook that has done the rounds. Instead, offer a report that you've written yourself - it doesn't have to be lengthy - that offers real value.

P is for Passion. The most successful list builders that I know have real passion for what they do. They love their product, they love their customers, they love adding value, they just love every moment of the Internet marketing merry-go-round. You need codevelop that as well. Don't get bogged down; reach for that lightness of being! Enjoy! be passionate!

Q is for Questions. The very best way to get incredible feedback from your subscribers is to ask them questions. every now and again, devote your mailout around questions about your product, your emails, even you! Maybe offer some kind of lure such as an extra subscription, or download. Structure your questionnaire carefully, and you will get some great information.

R is for Rant. I have a favourite marketeer who has also coached me. Every so often he publishes a "Rant" on his blog. Something that makes him mad as hell! It could be serial refunders. It could be idiots who don;t read the manual. It could be a product that manifestly fails to do what it promised. The point is, when John rants his readers really get a feel for what drives him, what matters, and what he cares about. You want your readers to feel the same about you. So don't be afraid to share your rants with your list!

S is for Sales. Yep - sales is what your list is about. Never, ever forget that. 'Nuff said.

T is for Testing. Make it a regular habit to test different types of headline or click through and see which one is effective. Most reputable autoresponder services allow you to "split test" i.e. compare alternate headlines / links and see which one generates the best response. it can seem a daunting process at first, but it isn't difficult. You can really improve your reader responses.

U is for "Uh-oh" as in "Uh-oh, I really bobbed in my last mail out". Mistakes happen. We all make them. The difference is how you handle them afterwards. Explain to your list what went wrong, and what you are going to do about it. People are incredibly tolerant when they know what happened. And if you need to, over-compensate to make up and recover trust.

V is for Value. "Value" is a theme that runs through the ABC of listbuilding. If words were syntax, then "value" would be a vowel, one of those vital letters that appear in every word. Add value, create value, be an ambassador for value. You won't regret it, even if it takes a little bit longer to finish the job.

W is for Waffle. Don't.

X is for x as in 4x5. In other words, a multiplier. Always seek ways to find the multiplier for your list. Encourage subscribers for forward your mailouts to others. Look for JVs. Spend time investigating ways that your list can grow exponentially through list rings, giveaways etc.

Y is for Yardstick. A yardstick was an accurate, measured, piece of wood. Now it stands for quality, or standards. So what is your yardstick? How do you want your list to be rated? Who are you measuring yourself against? What are you criteria for success? Think about it - and then keep to it.

Z is for ZZZZZ. You need your sleep. Live a balanced life. Enjoy your success.

My best to you.
