Is there a fine line between the serious and the mediocre? I would have to comment by saying that the line is rather thick. When you are engauged in business networking do you notice a difference between the "Players" and the spectators? Maybe the thick line I just described isn't as apparent during the initial encounter.
Perhaps it is only later that the real seriousness is recognized. Of course, it is through the actions of an individual that one can truly tell their amount of dedication to their objectives.
However, if you have been networking long enough, your experience will allow you to detect early on, who's the real deal. It can be likened to what some call a "gut instinct" but that can take years to develop.
The above is referencing the receiving side but what about the projection end? How does one show that they are serious and either a "Player" or a highly potential one?
This is somewhat of a double edged sword. On one side, it is good to reinforce your own beliefs and give yourself a self check, regarding your seriousness. On the other hand, in order to attract the right people, your seriousness must be very obvious. Here are 3 tips to keep in mind;
1. Make your word your bond.
A bond can be known as the glue or centerpiece that holds two or more things together. Legal contracts and agreements hold things together in our business world but there is an unwritten rule that a man's words should do so likewise.
This means that anything you say regarding a business transaction, goal, or anything that is defining of your trust, can be backed strongly by just your word. Only serious people can uphold there end of this rule.
2. Everything must be consistent.
Being consistent doesn't just mean being able to continue with a certain thing. It means that what ever you have discussed or described to a new contact regarding yourself or your business, holds true with out any exaggeration. In other words, there should be no holes in your story.
3. Show and prove.
As the old saying goes "Talk is cheap". When you are showing a new contact that you are a serious contender, you should be able to represent all you have verbally presented. When the time comes, you should be able to prove your position on many different levels, even if you are just beginning in a certain field. If you cannot do this, and that is the case, you should never over extend your abilities. Once you do, you have proven that you are definitely not serious and don't really mean business.
