How to Land a PSW Job

. The "age old" story holds true. Ontario based residents are getting older, many are reaching retirement and the majority will require care in one form or another.

While the sheer number of incoming PSW's can frighten off some job hunters, the number of employees required far out weights the number within the force work, so there are jobs to be had. Of course it's still better to stand out from the crowd than to blend in.

Here are some tips that should help you stand out from the crowd.

Know your transportation

Depending on where you live and where your prospective employer's work needs to take place (is it in one location, an outreach program, etc), make sure that you can readily answer the transportation question. Do you have a valid drivers license? A vehicle. If not, can you verbally showcase to an employer that you know the your local public transportation in and out? This is an often overlooked aspect of a job interview or resume.

Stay up to date

If you've recently finished a certification program make sure to put the completion date on your resume. Also, if you are currently working in the field take advantage of as many free in-house and outsourced training programs as you can. These will make your current and future resumes standout, especially in a crowded employment market such as Toronto and even in the smaller ones.

Create a Cover Letter

Creating a cover letter to go along with resume has two main advantages. Firstly it allows you to give the hiring manager some extra information in your own words about yourself, your experience, your skill set, talents etc. Secondly, you can bet that most other applicants aren't including a cover letter. By adding one yourself you are showing decision makers that you are willing to go the extra mile.

Know where to look

If you're in the market for a job, use the best sources online and off to find the right job. Visit personal support worker canada, the various Toronto based newspaper websites (which cover the entire province), such as the Globe, Star, & Sun, online portals such as Kijiji & Workopolis, subscribe to free job ad e-mail updates from PSWJobs dot com and keep your ears open for opportunities from friends and co-workers in the industry. Two other sources that require an extra step but that can yield great results are visiting a local job centre or calling your past support worker schools employment centre. It's always better to have too many sources than too few.
