When it comes alternative energy sources, one of the most popular trends is home made solar panels. These can be cost effective, easy to build, and in general very good for our environment as compared to traditional energy sources. One of the critical aspects to understand about solar power is that it generates power via the sun. This is important to keep in as you build and install a solar panel.
One of the first considerations when building a solar panel is the material and parts required for your project. The most important part in any project of this sort is the solar panel itself. There are essentially three major choices in this category; single crystal panels, multi-crystal panels, and thin film panels. The single variety is probably the best quality in terms of efficiency, but will cost you the most. When it comes to the multi variety, you can expect less efficiency, but they will also be less expensive. This can be a good choice if you receive a lot of direct sun light. The film panels are probably the least durable and efficient, and thus, the least expensive.
The second area to be concerned with is where you want to install a solar panel. As mentioned before, these are going to require sun light in order to generate power, so be sure to install them where it will receive plenty of sun light. You also want to be sure to place it where it has easy access to your home.
Last, but certainly not any less important than the other considerations, is that you need to be sure that when you install a solar panel, you have all of the appropriate approvals in place. With many housing developments these days you are a part of a homeowners' association that has certain covenants that govern what you can place on your premises. Be sure to check with your covenants as to what the restrictions might be in place when it comes to yard structures or structures on your home. Not only do you need to be concerned with your homeowner covenants, you must be sure to check with your local ordinances, to make sure no specific restrictions are in place.
