How to Improve Flexibility

Good flexibility is critical to good health. Flexibility has been show to correlate with good circulation, posture, and over-all health. It has also been shown to prevent and even heal injuries. If you're like me, you're not at all naturally flexible. I seem to have been born with an extra rigid spine. The following are some things I've done in order to improve flexibility in my body.

Warm up before stretching. Stretching with cold muscles can actually be detrimental to our muscles and joints. Most professionals recommend at least 10 minutes of warming up before stretching. Doing a short run or cardio workout of 10 minutes before stretching is critical for improving flexibility.

Stretching is done most effectively by starting at the top of your head and then moving down to your feet. Stretching is best done by separating your muscles into groups. Start with the shoulders, neck, and tricep region and then slowly move down to the calf, ankle region.

When stretching, hold stretches for about 5 breaths. Breath in and out deeply. Breathing properly can help you relax and lengthen your body, meanwhile, helping you to improve flexibility.

Stretch after your workout. This will help move lactic acid(the main cause of muscle soreness) out of your muscles, and will help prevent injury. Additionally, even if you don't workout, improving flexibility through a short routine would not be a bad idea.

The best thing I've done in order to improve flexibility has been to get into yoga. Yoga is great for improving flexibility. If you found these tips helpful, you can check out my yoga blog for yoga practices that are good for flexibility through the link below.
