Learning how to hit a driver into the wind is one of the most important skills you can master to maximize your fun on the golf course. It just plain stinks to be on your way to the course and dreading the fact that the wind is blowing! How am I going to score well in this wind??
For most golfers, just getting the ball off the tee and in play is the tough part with wind. More specifically, when the drive is directly into the wind, we tend to have the most trouble. This is because spin is increased and any offline shot with spin will end up worse than on a calm day.
Here are 3 simple tips to help you hit it in play every time when playing into the wind.
Wind Shot Tip 1) Swing Easier
Just remember, "When it's breezy, swing easy". This is perhaps the MOST important tip for hitting shots into the wind. This may be the only tip you need to worry about.
If you swing hard into the wind in order to give it more distance (because of the wind!) then you will impart more spin on the ball. This will cause the shot to go offline and climb into the teeth of the wind. Swing easy and you'll have less spin on the ball, which will make it go further and more online.
Wind Shot Tip 2) Tee the Ball Slightly Lower
Now you MUST follow tip #1 if you are going to tee the ball lower. Teeing the ball lower will make it easier to hit the ball lower, thus keeping it out of the wind.
However, if you don't heed the first tip and swing too hard, then teeing it lower will actually cause you to impart more backspin on the ball, because you will go down after the ball even harder.
Wind Shot Tip 3) Play More Club
Obviously if you are hitting driver, this tip doesn't apply. But if you are on a hole where you usually hit an iron off the tee, or maybe a 3 wood, take a longer club and swing it easier to impart less spin.
Follow these 3 tips and you'll hit it straighter off the tee into the wind every time.
