You must make sure you have packed everything that you will need on the trip obviously. You should pack a carry on bag that has enough clothes, etc. to last you a couple days if you lose your main baggage. Once at the airport, make sure all liquids are in a small Ziploc bag or they will be thrown away.

Finding your luggage

Make your bags stand out. My worst experience was being at an airport and looking for a black bag, amongst 1000 black bags. You must tie something to your bag to make it stand out from the others. We used a tacky scarf or handkerchief. Once bags are claimed, make sure there are not leakages or breaks in your bag. Sometimes bags are subject to be randomly checked by airport security and they may accidentally bust something in your bag.

Unpacking

When unpacking remember how long you will be at your destination. You may want to simply live out of your bag if only staying for a few days. If you are on a longer stay, you may want hotel laundry to come and flow your clothes or iron your nice cloths. Always hang clothing up if you plan on wearing them to a special occasion. When repacking, it's always easier to simply roll up cloths and it takes up less space. Rolling up cloths also helps protect souvenirs from being broken during transport.
