Many people all around the world continue to seek different ways that will allow them to reduce their outflow of money - however, do people realize that this can be implemented on home energy bills? Isn't this something we should pay attention to as well? Making your home into an energy efficient house can be done very simply. Many of us are still unaware of how much energy is continually being wasted due to our irresponsible actions inside our homes.
Reducing the amount of electricity that is used through appliances is a great strategy that ensures energy efficiency. Although saving electricity can be done in a number of ways, the very basic way that this can be done is by turning off lights in rooms you are not using. This is almost always overlooked, but is indeed one of the most effective ways of saving energy immediately.
It is a common notion amongst many people that "leaving appliances (such as televisions and games consoles etc) on standby saves energy". Okay, fair enough, they use less energy than they do when they are being used, but, what escapes most people is the fact that leaving appliances on standby still uses only a small fraction less of the energy they use when they are not on standby! So, turning off appliances that are not being used is still the best choice to make.
Certain appliances use energy when they are not being used, like microwaves. These should be unplugged when they are not needed. You can consider the fact that, appliances on standby (or ones that are plugged, not being used, but still consume energy) contribute to, on average, between 5-10% of your home energy usage, as the 'icing on the cake'.
Other appliances, like computers and laptops, fall under the same category - that is, they consume energy when they are on standby / when the screensaver is displayed. This can be avoided by enabling the "Display Blanking" feature, usually accessible from your desktop appearance settings. This will allow your monitor to switch off after a certain time that your computer remains idle. You can set this time yourself for more convenience.
How does it sound to pay between $50 - $100 less every year on your energy bills? You can do this just by turning off your monitor and other appliances instead of leaving them on standby! You can also save more energy by using energy-efficient screens, for example, LCD screens, which use 34% of the energy that a CRT monitor uses.
Another example of irresponsible actions, that produce consequences your wallet has to suffer, is the temperature of your hot water. Do you know that, on average, the highest temperature (in degrees) that you need your thermostat to be is 60 degrees? So having this temperature set to 60 degrees centigrade is all that is required by your home. If your thermostat reading is already 60 degrees, try taking it down to 59 - let's be realistic - you won't even notice this change, yet it can save you even more money when your annual energy usage all adds up.
As I stated earlier, there are many, many aspects of your lifestyle that can be altered very simply, but are also able to yield very powerful results. For example, who would think that using a front loading washing machine is a better, more energy-efficient choice than using a top loading machine? Well, it's true - and statistical evidence is available for this. Dryers also are a waste of energy - you don't even need one - it has been scientifically proven that clothes being dried by natural heat, as on a drying line outside in your garden, tend to produce more effective results than it would if you dried them in a machine.
Hopefully, you can see that energy saving isn't such a difficult thing to do. All you need to do is apply the changes that you can, including the other changes mentioned across the span of information available on my website. You can also feel free to invent your own solutions - creativity and imagination are two of the most important reasons why scientists have managed to find such solutions to energy wastage.
Of course, research plays a big part too, which you can do also by going around your home and locating things that you think can waste energy. It should be a great inspiration for you to know that you can save very significant amounts of money on your energy bills every year by making such small adaptations to your ways of living.
