My father used to call me JLM - 'Just let me'. Yes, I was like every other child, especially at bedtime, eager to stay up just that bit longer. I think my parents would have welcomed what I am about to show you.
It has all to do with how a youngster can so easily become deeply engrossed in whatever they are doing. Whether it is playing with a favourite toy or dressing a doll, they readily move into their own fantasy world.
You may not be aware but they have actually moved into a state of hypnosis. This is because the conscious mind has virtually cut off and the subconscious has moved to the fore. But don't worry, this is not something to be alarmed about, it is totally natural. However it does give you the opportunity to use the situation to your advantage.
Because the child is in a state of hypnosis it means that he or she is more open to suggestion. So, all you have to do is to move fairly close to them. Wait for a few moments to allow them to get used to your presence. When you feel that the time is right, just say quietly but clearly, "You are feeling sleepy and really want to cuddle up with Teddy in your bed."
This is of course only an example. You would be wise to think of your own suggestion that would have the desired effect. Nobody knows your child better than you do.
Don't repeat the exercise, just wait to see what results. If nothing happens then wait until there is another opportunity. Now change the suggestions slightly. You will soon hit the right spot.
Adults vary as to how good a hypnotic subject they are. Children however are fantastic hypnotic subjects, I suppose because of their ability to drift into a world of their own where anything is possible. This means that they are better at accepting and acting upon suggestions.
Once you have mastered the technique it will become almost a routine to put the suggestion to your child. It will soon become a matter of fact thing rather than a bit of apparent magic.
Once the child has gone to bed then it would the ideal opportunity to go up and have a cuddle and read a story to them.
