How to Get the Most Out of Your Players - Keys to Communication

The most important aspect in order to getting the most out of your netball players is to recognise the different personalities in a team. Work on how to get the most and best out of each of those personalities. Individuals learn in different ways such as visual (sight), auditory (sound) or kinaesthetic (touch). If you can tap into and work with the appropriate level of communication for each player you will be better equipped to guide and train them as a team.

Team sports are, arguably the most challenging for trainers and coaches. Getting the most from your players in netball is all about finding the balance in the various areas below and keeping the lines of communication open.

Trust - working both ways
Building trust for your team and developing an individual player's trust in their coach is an ongoing process. Encourage your players to have the confidence and trust to bring up thoughts and concerns with the coach which may be difficult but needs to be spoken about. Be approachable and let the team know you are there to listen to their concerns.

Clarity
Performance will be the ultimate result after clear instructions. Make sure each member of the team has a good understanding of what is being asked of them as an individual and as part of the side.

Decision making
With proper guidance in training and at practice each player will be able to respond in an instant to any decision from the coach, a fellow team player or the umpire when it comes to playing on the court for real.

Skills objectives
Honing skills and knowing what objectives are required should be reinforced at each training session. Incorporate new techniques into your netball coaching and drills sessions with the view to develop the individual players and team skills.

Team challenges
Looking at team challenges and opportunities to extend players' abilities in practice will pay dividends on the court. Arrange to play with another team that has equal or slightly better skills than yours or use half the court to improve stamina and prevent boredom.

A note on communication and learning

Understanding that everyone has a dominant sense for communicating and learning will help in guiding the individual. While everyone uses sight, sound and touch to some extent each of us favours one over the other two.

Finding out early how each player learns and responds to instruction will save valuable time in training sessions. Work with individual personalities to get them to develop their abilities for when they are playing as part of a team and improve the dynamics on the court.

The ability to communicate and work effectively to bring out the best in each team member is an important aspect of the coaching process. By tapping into each personality and developing their special skills you will be better able to train them as a team
