How to Get in Golf Shape, Part 3 - Golf Exercises

The first position we are going to talk about is the setup. Jack Nicklaus said that the set up is 80% of what it takes to hit a good golf shot. This is one of the most important parts of golf and you need to make sure you are setup to the ball perfectly every single time.

You need to start by working on your posture. Posture is one of the most important parts of your setup. Without proper posture you will not be able to put the golf club in the key positions that you need to in order to make a good swing and hit the ball where you want it to go.

It is natural to try to round your back and slump your shoulders. This is not a good position to be in if you want to hit the golf ball where you are trying to put it. You need to bow at the waist while keep your chin up, back straight, and your shoulder tall and square. This will give you the correct position for hitting a golf ball.

There is an exercise to help teach you the proper setup. It will involve a kitchen chair and a medicine ball or some sort of weight. You will want to place the weight on the chair, face the chair, bend slightly at the knees, bow at the waist, while keeping your back straight, your chin up, and your shoulders square and tall. Once in this position pick up the weight and touch it to the top of the chair.

Perform this exercise 10 to 12 times and do three sets. This exercise will help you to learn how to keep proper posture at set up. The next exercise involves a golf club and a medicine ball or a soccer ball.

You will hold the ball in between your knees in your set up position while holding the golf club across your hips with both hands. This will also help your muscles to learn proper posture while strengthening your set up muscles.

These two exercises will help with your setup tremendously and you will be a better golfer because of them. The fourth part of this series will discuss the initial takeaway.
