How to Fight Wrinkles Without Spending a Fortune

Expert Author Hope Varnes

Wrinkles, I think, are every woman's nemesis. We spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds trying to combat it but we know that it is really a losing battle. One day it will win, all we can do is delay the inevitable. We can try and delay the appearance of wrinkles until we are in our 40's or even 50's if possible. Many have done and succeeded.

How do we delay the appearance of wrinkles? I'm not talking about botox here because I can't afford it. I am not talking any miracle cream either, as I am tight fisted and only want to spend five quid on a face cream. I am talking about food, something we have to spend our money on anyway unless we plan to starve and that's definitely not an option for me as I love my food.

Food is the cheap way to beat wrinkles. It contains scientifically proven nutrients that hydrate and protect our skin and prevents the dreaded wrinkles from appearing early.

When you were little, you might got feed up listening to your parents banging on about eating your veg but they were right after all. Fruits and vegetables are our main weapons in our battle against wrinkles.

So, what are the top foods that we should be feasting on? Well, they are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and cantaloupes, grapes.

What do they have in common? They have oodles of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are like little soldiers that zaps free radicals in our bodies. What are free radicals? They are like little rebels in our body that cause almost everything in our skin to go wrong, from dryness to wrinkles and even the dreaded cancer.

Have you heard of collagen? Many of the miracle creams that promise a quick fix against wrinkles advertise it as part of the ingredients. Well, collagen is a protein that naturally occurs in our body and is abundant in our skin. If it breaks down it causes our skin to sag and wrinkle. However, every night as we sleep, our body produces collagen so it can repair any damage we acquire. Vitamin C is essential in keeping our collagen supple and healthy. Without Vitamin C, our body will not be able to produce collagen. That is why; keeping our body supplied with enough vitamin C means that it can produce the much needed collagen to repair our skin tissues.

We don't need expensive skin cream for that, we just need to drink a lot orange juice, lemonade, grapefruit juice or lime juice. The liquid will also hydrate our skin.

Love your tea? Then, why not go for green tea? It is rich in EGCG (stands for Epigallocatechin gallate). I won't bore you with details, but what it is, is a very strong anti-oxidant. Remember those little soldiers zapping the little rebels (free radicals)? Well, this is equivalent of Rambo protecting your skin from wrinkles.

Top tip: don't use very hot water when making your green tea, ECGC changes it properties if gets over heated and may not be as effective.

Add green vegetables as spinach, green beans and broccoli in your basket too, as they are rich in Vitamin A. This vitamin help in skin cell production. Lack of it makes you skin dry, tough and scaly.

Finally, don't forget your fish. Salmon, tuna, trout, sardines or mackerel are rich in Omega-3. Omega-3 protects skin from inflammation and sunburn, two of the major cause of skin aging. It also makes your sunscreen more effective.

All these foods will give you keep your skin younger looking for longer without breaking your bank balance. Which means you can spend more money on an extra pair of shoes and a handbag to match.
