At any age exercise is important, especially for those of us who want to exercise after 50. Men and women who are over the age of 50 need a daily exercise program to keep active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If your over the age of 50 here are a few exercising tips you may want to follow.
Walk as often as you can. For older adults walking is the optimal exercise, especially if your not already on a consistent exercise program, or for that matter even started one. You need to get yourself a good pair of walking shoes and begin to walk. Don't over do it and walk at a comfortable pace.
Get yourself a walking stick. You'll need a walking stick especially if you plan to walk in wooded areas. It will prevent serious falls and can also be used to help you keep your balance.
For us Baby Boomer's we need to join a fitness club that is designed to meet our needs. Here's a few that you may want to think about that are great for adults - Bally Total and Curves and Cuts are two great options.
Go to the gym and workout with a fitness trainer. A fitness trainer will take into consideration your age and fitness goals and design a fitness program around both to meet your needs.
The time you spend exercising should be increased with each workout. When starting out with your exercise program you don't want to push your body. Rather, gradually increase the time spent for each session. For example, if you begin exercising for 15 minutes a day add another 5 minutes to the workout when you feel your ready.
Warnings and Tips
Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program after the age of 50. Make sure your doctor is aware of any health concerns you may have and above all make sure you let him or her know if your experiencing any serious symptoms during your exercise sessions.
We want to prevent falls and that's why a walking stick is important. Let's face reality at our age it's much easier to break a bone than when we were 20.
