When you enter a jeweler's shop, you are shown a wide range of diamond engagement rings that dazzle before your eyes. But that dazzle may not necessary be genuine as the diamond on the ring may be of inferior quality or a fake stone just to take advantage of your lack of knowledge and inexperience. So, if you do not possess a sound or working knowledge about the diamonds, then take an expert with you to the shop. But even if you go alone, some of the basics can ensure that you buy a genuine ring.

The jewelers are always under pressure to earn as big a profit as they possibly can as they have to meet high overhead expenses and they have to pay taxes also. So, most of the jeweler would not hesitate to take advantage of your inexperience and they can instantly know that you are a novice. In order to make huge profit, such jewelers will not miss the chance of selling you a fake diamond as genuine one at very expensive rates.

We advise you to have at least a working knowledge through the diamond books or internet. Have color pictures of the diamond engagement rings and the precious gems and know how they look from the fake ones. This will make you little more confident in the shop.

When the jeweler displays the rings on the counter, do not be impressed instantly. Instead, adopt a cautious approach. In order to find out if the diamond is genuine, ask the jeweler straightforwardly to view the stone through a viewing loupe. Leave the shop instantly, if the jeweler is not able to do so and gives excuses. Note that a genuine jeweler will readily provide you a loupe to inspect the diamond.

Make doubly sure that to ask the jeweler to show you the quality certificate that comes with the diamond. The certificate must be from reputed institutions like GIA or AGS. If the jeweler has no such certification, do not trust the shop in come out from it assuming that the jeweler is hiding something.

Some jewelers will try to sell you synthetic Moissanite diamonds as genuine ones. To identify such stones, take the loupe from the jeweler to examine. If you note that the stone has double facets or a doubled diamond table reflection, then it is synthetic and not one of the real diamond engagement rings.

A problem while shopping for the rings comes when avoiding Cubic Zirconia fake diamonds. They look like the genuine precious gems. You can know a fake stone by placing a newspaper behind the stone. If you can read the print then it is a fake stone. The real diamond wills scatter the light so that you can not read the news print.

Some jewelers will go to the extent of selling a yellow diamond as a white and colorless one and they will place the gem against a black background in order to avoid the color. For genuine diamond engagement rings, make sure that you view the diamond against the white background that will expose any yellow color.
