There is no denying the fact that we are living in a technological age and with this come many advantages and disadvantages. Throughout the past few years, there is this concern that technology is taking away to beauty of the written word by replacing it with the first letter of the word.
Whether this is the case or not, one thing remains and that is, reading. We are living in an age that is demanding we read if we would like to learn and know anything. Therefore, so as to foster this desire to read in our children, we can do these few things:
Read to Them
The day that we find out that we are pregnant, it is a good idea to begin reading to our baby and, before we know it, it will be a natural thing to do. We do not have to read only "baby books" at this stage, we can continue reading our regular materials such as the Bible, newspaper, magazines, etc.
After they are born, we can continue reading the same things that we have been reading, however at this point, we must include "baby book" for them. Books that are filled with colorful pictures really gets their attention.
Let us Read
Our children should see us reading for information as we as for pleasure.
Library
We can take them to the library for their own library card and afterwards we should make frequent trips to it. Additionally, they should be given the opportunity to participate in choosing what books and other library materials to borrow.
Listen to Audio Books
Audio Books are one of the best things there are out there. Some of them has a book and some do not. With younger children, it is best to grab the ones with the books so that they can read along with the narrator. However, we can also grab the ones without a book and play them in the vehicle.
Let them Read
They should also be verbally encouraged to read by themselves and we can take turns reading with them. They can read a few words and then we can read a few words, going back and forth until we reach the end of the book.
