In this article, we'll take a look at how to register a domain name yourself and how to do it at a very cheap cost.
Anyone who wants to do business online needs a domain name; also known as a website address. And anyone at all from brick and mortar businesses, to people who just want to connect with friends and family can register one of their very own.
As a business however, having your own domain name gives your business more credibility than a free website would.
For instance; let's say that a local business in your town sold coffee. This business had a website address listed on their business cards as "coffeestore.thisfreewebsite.com".
Another business in your town also sold coffee but their website address was instead "thecoffeestore.com". Which one appears to be more professional to you?
So now that we know the "why's" behind a domain name, how do we register that website address?
First, you use a company online called a "domain name registrar". These are companies who can locate and register a website address for you.
Registration fees vary depending upon the registrar that you choose. For example, they can range anywhere from $10 / year all the way up to $40 / year and higher. But what's important to remember is that the only difference between registrar's is the amount of money they charge you to own that domain name. They all perform the same kind of service and offer the same kind of product.
When you find the domain name that you want, you'll then be asked to fill in some details about that web site address. This will be basic information about you and/or your company. These areas simply assure that you are the owner of that web site address and it will allow your registrar to contact you in the future. This is especially helpful if your website address is expected to expire soon and you need to be notified that you'll need to renew it.
After you pay for the web-site address, you will then own that domain name. The next thing you'll need to do is find web hosting which is also very affordable (in most cases). Web hosting is where all of the files for your site will reside whenever someone types in your brand new website address. You absolutely need web hosting for your website address. Your website cannot exist without it.
All in all, registering a domain name isn't difficult but it can be time consuming if you're trying to locate just the perfect web-site address. Once you have found it however, don't procrastinate.
Someone else out there may have the same idea you do and may snap up that website address if you don't grab it while you can.
