Of all of the skills to master in basketball, learning how to dribble a basketball better is probably the one that all players try to tackle first. The reason being is because most of us start out playing the sport as guards. So it only makes sense that we all learn how to dribble first.
As players usually grow in height, their position on the court usually changes accordingly. However, with the evolution of the game you now have tall perimeter players doing more with the ball than ever before. So if you don't want to be left in the dust, I recommend you master dribbling.
Well not to worry. I'm here to tell you some simple ways to improve your dribbling. Here are 5 steps.
Step One
Dribble the ball everywhere you go. If you're going to school or to visit friends, dribble your ball there. Make the ball become like a part of your body. I used to even sleep with my basketball when I was younger. Yeah I know that might be a little extreme. But the ball felt like an arm or leg to me. I hardly ever lost it.
Step Two
Work on touching the ball more at home periodically throughout the day. Keep the ball in your hands while watching TV. Roll it off your finger tips and things like this. Over time you'll really notice the familiarity you have with the ball.
Step Three
Practice the fundamentals. Get good at mastering the basics of dribbling. Always start out practicing the basics. Just work on dribbling with both hands. Then work on high and low dribble. Work on fingertip control by dribbling the ball very low. Then move to working on basic moves, crossover, between the legs, etc.
Dribbling is like riding a bike. At first you need training wheels and with practice eventually you're riding without even thinking about it. The same thing happens with dribbling.
Step Four
Watch the game as much as you can. Watch what guards are doing on the court. Study their moves and how they dribble. Check out their moves and pick a few to practice.
I would study the college guards and professional guards whenever a game was on. I recommend you do the same. Also, take notes on the moves that they do that are very effective.
Step Five
Make up your own moves. Have some go to moves to use when you're on the court. I used to create my own moves and I would give them a name. One of my favorite moves I called the stunner move. This was one of my favorite moves. And I made it up. It was very effective and it was one of my go to moves.
Maybe you won't go so far as to name your moves as I did. But I definitely recommend that you create some of your own moves and master them.
