Step 1: Before you attempt a back flip, try jumping on your back, and then swing your feet over your head kind of like a backward somersault and attempt to land on your feet. This may be rather difficult at first, but keep attempting it. If you cannot quite make it around then make sure you tuck in midair and drive your hands back after you get into the air from your back. One bad habit is to flip a little "off axis." Make sure that you are looking directly over your head and not over your shoulder when you bounce. This can lead to very messed up flips.
Step 2: Just like any other trick, you're going to have to simply "try it" eventually. Begin by getting a solid good bounce where you would feel comfortable flipping. Remember, you do not have to go huge to do a backflip. Likewise, be sure that you are starting close to the edge of the trampoline where there is a majority of room on the tramp behind you. During the bounce before you are going to flip, place both your hands back behind you so that you can thrust them back and up above your head on takeoff. Once you become airborne, push your hips forward and up towards the sky, push your hands up and back, tilt you head back slightly, then tuck up by pulling you knees to your chest. Like the frontflip, just hold your tuck for a split second until you're about two thirds to three fourths of the way back to your landing. Then straighten up your body and place your hands forward. From here you will see the trampoline and see where you're going to land.
Step 3: A frequent mistake for people just learning to backflip is that they fly rearwards a lot during their backflip. This is why I had you begin your backflip near the edge in the first step. To stop this from happening, you need to be more patient in your back flip. In other words you cannot begin looking over your head too early in your bounce. Starting your flip too early makes the strength of your jump go backwards and off the tramp rather than upwards in a pretty, big flip. To make things simpler, simply try to land in the same part of the trampoline as where you began your back flip. (A little distance back is fine) At the beginning, back flips are very scary and intimidating, but once you land the first few, you will notice that they're actually very easy!
I hope you have benefited from this article and that is has instructed you how to do a flip without injury. If you follow the instructions carefully, you should learn a back flip fairly quickly. For more resources, just search Youtube for "trampoline back flip tutorial." Don't forget that safety is the most important part of trampolining, so if possible, have somebody spot you or oversee your back flip attempt. The key to getting the hang of backflips is practice and determination. Good luck and please get in touch me if you have any questions.
