How to Develop the Proper Putting Grip

Most golfers could easily improve their putting ability by using the proper putting grip. Many of us live in regions where you cannot play because of the winter weather, in those cases, you can easily practice at home. If you take the time to do just this, your golf game will have advanced to the next level.

Learning how to smoothly hit the ball will go a long way in developing the proper putting grip. Make sure when you swing your putter that the motion is natural and not jerky. Ensure that you follow through and don't look up too early.

Once you have the motion of hitting the ball down pat. It is now time to work on the proper putting grip. To get the proper putting grip, put the grip into the palm of your left hand and then wrap your hand around the whole grip. Next you want to place your right hand underneath your left. Then use your left index finger to overlap your right hand. The end result is that your palms should be opposite to each other and have a nice, locked feeling. During the winter you can easily practice this anywhere at home.

After this feels natural and comfortable to you, you want to be concerned about how much pressure you are using. Remember that a putt is a soft stroke. You want to have a soft hold on your golf club. Learn to hold the club as lightly, but as securely as possible. The actual handle should not slip around in your hands.

Then you want to start practicing your swing, keeping your pressure light. If you tighten up when playing your stroke, you are creating tension which only results in inconsistency.

Practice does make perfect, take the time to perfect your golf swing and the proper putting grip as much as possible. If you practice during the off season, you will have more time to get out onto the golf course and play.

Once you are comfortable using the proper putting grip you can start to look at some different options. There are variations on the basic grip.

The reverse overlap is the same as mentioned above only overlapping with the right index finger. A popular grip, used by many golfers when putting is the cross-handed grip. Basically this is when your left hand is closer to the putter head as opposed to the right hand. The biggest advantage of using this grip is that it stops the left wrist from bending backwards.

Another grip is the split-handed grip, here the hands are not held together. You separate your hands by a few inches, so that the right hand can take firm control of the putting stroke.

Using any proper putting grip or variation of that grip will have its advantages and disadvantages. You just have to experiment and find the one that works the best for you. When you find the proper putting grip you will have more confidence when playing your shots. Stick with this grip and perfect it some more.
