It is a fact that video games are children's main form of entertainment these days. From the arcades to the game console in your own home, your child probably spends a good amount of time topping their scores, doing races, and shooting things. But is this healthy? How do you know if your child is addicted to video games.
To determine if your child is addicted to video games, you need to answer the following questions:
1. Does your child neglect his or her basic needs in order to play games? If your child forgets to eat or even shower because they would rather play games, you have a problem.
2. Does your child resort to playing games when he or she has problems or is feeling sad? If video games have become a much-needed escape for your child, he or she is most likely addicted. Thinking that video games can help ease their problems all the time is not healthy.
3. Does your child play for longer periods of time? If he plays for longer periods of time even for just twice a week, you will need to seek help right away. Playing for longer periods of time can lead to more serious physical problems for your child.
4. Is your child no longer interested with going out with his friends? Withdrawal from his group of friends or even from you is a major sign of his video game addiction. If he would rather play games than go out to have fun with other people, it is a sign that he or she is hooked with the alternate universe that games provide.
5. Has your child been shirking away from his or her responsibilities? This point does not only refer to not doing his or her chores. If you notice your child's grades dropping and and they are showing a decreasing interest in schoolwork, it is time to get help.
