How to Deal With a Baby Who Has Developed Colic

Expert Author Joe Sloan

Colic develops in healthy infants that are growing normally. Colic in infants usually begins within the first few weeks they are home. It does not occur in every infant, nor should you expect that your infant will develop colic. You can suspect that your baby has colic if these things happen: your baby cries for long periods at about the same time every day- mostly after feedings, the baby is often fussy and irritable or cannot sleep, has gas or a bloated or distended stomach. Sometimes they will pull their legs up to the chest and look extremely distressed.

If these symptoms occur and you are unable to comfort the child, this is how to deal with a colic baby. Make sure that the baby is not hungry. Try picking the baby up and burping him to relieve any gas in the abdomen. Burping the baby more often during feedings and giving more frequent, smaller feedings can relieve colic symptoms.

Swaddling and holding the baby will give a sense of security. Offering a pacifier will sometimes calm a fussy child. A soothing background noise or playing one of the commercial compact disks that have mothers' heart sounds might work. In extreme situations, a ride in the car will deal with a colic baby. Some babies might cry and fuss because they might be over-stimulated so try swaddling and taking them into a dark or darkened room and hold them.

If these techniques do not work, an appointment with a doctor might be in order to rule out a more serious illness. If the diagnosis still suggests that you are dealing with a colic baby, be comforted to know that colic should subside before the fourth month. Ask for respite and support from relatives and friends during this time so you can also take care of yourself.
