Everybody knows that stress at work is unavoidable. But what if you could relieve that stress on the spot, right at your desk? Try these quick and easy techniques, and your work days will feel smoother. This makes you able to keep a sense of humor and be more efficient at figuring out problems at the job.

1. Breathe

As soon as you feel tension, close your eyes and take 3-5 deep, slow breaths. You'll notice your body relax and your mind settle. This is especially helpful before you start a big project or assignment that you've been worrying about...or before you hit 'send' on that angry email. Worry, anger and disappointment are states of mind that rob us.

2. Visualise

Do you have a favorite place, like the beach or a quiet corner, where you feel relaxed? Go there in your mind. Close your eyes and see yourself there, feeling warm and content. Imagine how it smells, how it feels, how it sounds. If you have a hard time with this, keep a picture of your oasis on your desk or as your screensaver, and use that to help you along. It will help you to pull out of a negative state.

3. Use a mantra

Do you have a favorite quote or saying? Memorize it, and repeat it to yourself when you're feeling overwhelmed. Say it in your head or under your breath, or print it out and keep it on or around your work space. This will keep your mind from spiralling into negative thinking, and may even help you to smile. It can be a sanskrit phrase or a short phrase from an inspiring quotation.

Stress at work doesn't have to ruin your day. These are just 3 of many effective techniques you can use to keep yourself feeling calm and relaxed, no matter what your work day throws at you. Try to use every situation as a setting to learn something about yourself.
