Having an ovarian cyst during pregnancy can be quite painful for the expectant mother. They can come in all shapes and sizes, and they are not uncommon at all. Many women can have them before during and after the pregnancy. The majority of these are small they usually cause no problems, and they will go away on their own. The bigger ones are the ones to worry about.
A vast majority of the cysts are fluid based mostly containing water and are usually benign. There are a small percentage of patients where they were malignant. Your Doctor will continue to monitor you to watch the progression of the ovarian cyst during your pregnancy. An Ultrasound can help to determine if this is malignant.
These usually occur when an egg passes through the fallopian tubes. Most of them will go away and diminish on their own, but in some cases with excessive hormones they stay and can grow rapidly. Most will diminish by the end of the first trimester, and a very small percentage of others will stay.
There are some complications from this while you are pregnant. The body on its own will normally twist and turn, and there is a good chance that it could rupture. This will cause an extreme amount of pain for the Mother. The ovaries are a very sensitive area.
The cyst can be removed after the 1st trimester to make the expectant Mother more comfortable. Your Doctor will watch the growth and size during this time, usually doing and Ultrasound every 2 to 3 weeks. IF this does not go down within a few weeks they might recommend an operation to remove it. In some very rare cases the cyst is too big and has caused damage to the uterus or fallopian tubes and they might have to be removes. This is why it is important for your Doctor to keep a close eye on them, and monitor their progress. If a decision is made to proceed with the operation it is ideal to do this at the beginning of the second trimester. Removing the cyst will make for an easier pregnancy especially if it is big.
An ovarian cyst during pregnancy should not cause any problems to your unborn child. Normally the placenta will take over and get rid of this for you in the first trimester. Most likely you will feel pain and discomfort from it being there. IF it is big enough there will be tenderness on your side, and dull pain. IF it ruptures then the pain will be more extreme.
