How to Choose the Perfect Crib, Bassinet Or Cradle for Your Baby

If you've just become the proud parent of a bouncing new baby then one of the most important things that you need to think about is your baby's sleeping arrangements. After all once you come home from hospital your baby will need somewhere to sleep.

There's a wonderful range of cribs, bassinets, cradles and baskets available for you to choose from, and one of the most important choices you make for your baby is which one you will buy.

However when you're making your choice there's a couple of important things that you need to consider.

Of course you need to consider convenience, and different types of cribs and cradles and bassinets have different levels of convenience. For example a crib cannot easily be moved from room to room. It is usually heavier, bulkier and more difficult to get through doorways, and usually it would be left in one place.

A bassinet is smaller, more convenient to move, lighter and easier to locate in a small area. For example if you wish to have your baby sleeping next to your bed there is rarely room for a crib.

And a portable bassinet which can be lifted from its base is extremely convenient when you're looking to go out for the evening with your baby. You have something with you for your baby to sleep in no matter where you are, and believe me this is extremely useful.

And there's some wonderful baskets, cradles and bassinets to choose from. Beautiful designs, wonderful colours, delightful bedding and more. And if you shop online you'll always buy it cheaper.

But there is one more factor that you need to consider that is far more important than all of these combined. Its safety.

You see there have been accidents before where babies have come to grief in a particular crib or bassinet because of failures in its design. From simple things like baby getting his finger caught somewhere right up to much more serious accidents, safety is a major consideration.

Fortunately there is an organisation called the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. This association sets clear standards for safety and any manufacturer of cribs, bassinets or cradles can apply for a certificate indicating that the particular product meets the standards set by the Association for safety.

So when you're a new parent and you're thinking about buying some baby furniture, including somewhere for your baby to sleep, by all means select by color, design, convenience or anything else, but make sure whatever piece of nursery furniture you choose it bears the certificate of safety from the Association.
