How to Choose a Domain Name

This might seem a bit of an odd thing to write about but when I first started out I didn't really understand the importance of a domain name or how it could actually assist with your on page SEO.

If you don't know about on page SEO then just do a quick Google or Yahoo search and there are plenty of articles that will show you what this is. Basically this is a way to make your website or blog attractive to the search engines.

So how to choose a domain name is actually quite important.

Your domain name should be relevant to your product. For example if you are selling or writing about dog training your domain name should be something similar. This is so the search engines know your site is related to what people are looking for.

I'll break this down a bit. Rob wants to find out about dog training and enters the search phrase how do you train your dog into say Google. Google wants Rob to have the best results for his question and they will look at the web and return what they think are the best results. One of the things they look at is the domain name. The other thing is when Rob is looking at the results if he is scan reading, which most people do, if he sees your domain name "howtotraindogs.com" he is more likely to click on your address than "nickyscookerysolutions.com."

I know this is an extreme example but I hope it clearly demonstrates the point. So how do you choose a domain name?

Look at your product and try and use the name or something similar. Remember you can use - in the name so you could use "how-to-train-your-dog.com" or you could use the number 2 instead of the word or a combination of both.

Try and use.com or.org or your country if its more specific to where you live like.co.uk. People are more familiar with.com and.org.

You could also look at buying an old domain name. Often these will already be attracting traffic so you give yourself a head start instead if setting up a brand new one.
