How to Change Negative Thinking

Expert Author David M. Carter

Negative thinking can be disastrous to our everyday lives if we allow those thoughts to consume us. It is negative thinking that is the cause for many of the daily struggles we face when it comes to money and business, dating and relationships, and even our own health and fitness.

Imagine living your whole life not knowing that it was your own self-beliefs that were causing you to not see the positive results that you had always wanted to bring about. Imagine realizing that most of the circumstances in your life were simply the result of your own subconscious thought process rather than external circumstances.

Although many will find such an idea hard to believe, it is really true that "as a man thinks, so is he". Hence, the only way for you to get the positive results that you really want to bring about in your life if to change your negative thinking into more positive and constructive thinking.

Here are a few tips and ideas to get you started on your way to changing your negative ways of thinking into more positive thought patterns:

Stop Blaming Others

The firs step to changing your negative thinking begins with realizing who is responsible for your thoughts and therefore your life. In order to do this, you must consciously stop blaming others for the way things are in your life.

Some of us blame us either vocally or mentally, and most of us do both. Vocal blame is when you cannot contain yourself and you are always lashing out at others for the way things are, criticizing others whether or not you have a legitimate reason. It creates a victim mentality, and it causes us to lose control.

Mental complain may not affect others, but it still affects us in that we still put the cause of events and circumstances outside of ourselves. If you want to change your negative thinking, stop blaming other people for the results in your life.

Instead, take responsibility for your own thoughts, and when a negative complaining thought begins to pop up, become aware of it and say "Stop, I'm in control of my life, no one else" Become aware of this process and you'll soon find yourself saying it mentally to yourself whenever you are tempted to complain of something or someone.

Change Your Environment

The people that you spend the most time will tend to have a vast influence over the way you think and act. That's not to say that you will agree with everything that they say or do, but you will be sympathetic towards their ideas.

Keep this in mind when you are around your present friends and family or if you are choosing new friends.

If you want to develop more positive thoughts, a good idea is to surround yourself with more positive people. Surround yourself with people who are working towards achieving worthwhile goals in their life. Find ways that you can be of assistance to such individuals and associate with them.

Become Aware of Your Inputs

This is similar to changing your environment except that it is much more persona. If you want to change your negative thinking towards more positive worthwhile thoughts, then you must become aware of the ideas that are feeding into your mind.

For example, what kind of music do you enjoy listening to the most? What kind of television shows and movies do you enjoy the most at this point in time? What about books, magazines, and newspapers? If the only things that you feed your mind are negative and disaster ridden in nature, then you can expect your thoughts to be the same.

As the saying goes, "garbage in, garbage out".

Of course, that's not to say that you must become like a hermit and completely isolate yourself from the realities and media that surrounds you, but you can become much more aware of what you feed your mind. Begin taking small steps and try to balance some of the negative outputs with something more positive.

Read books that will help you to develop into a more positive person, and watch movies that not only entertain and show the realities of everyday life, but that also display hope. You create your own reality, remember? So choose those inputs that are just like the positive thoughts and behaviors that you wish to bring about, and starve the negative thoughts.
