Walleye river fishing is a whole new can of worms. If you know what I mean. It all depends on where you are fishing. It sometimes takes a bit more skill. However the rewards are definitely there waiting for you. That being the fish! Now how do you catch river walleye?
Did you know that many river fishermen fish close to dams and the mouth of the rivers during spring fishing. This is well and good, but instead of being crammed together in a small area, do what some of the pros do.
A trick a lot of pro walleye anglers do is head upstream 10 miles from everyone else. That's where they find all the walleye that have not made it to the spawning beds.
Just remember that the fish don't all spawn in the same place or even at the same time. If you find a rock structure, springs, or rubble flats or structure with a deep transition shoreline. These will be your honey holes for walleye.
The way to find the best place on a river to fish for walleye, is you need to look for what has something that is characteristic of the walleye. Things like sandbars, a ledge or current break are the habitats for the spring walleye. Don't try to fish a big area all at once, fish small sections at a time. Fishing a big area will result in you losing out on the best spot and maybe that big walleye.
Also while fishing the deeper rivers remember that walleye are fighting the current as they travel upstream. They will rest in the deep holes along the way.
These areas are good spots for a heavier weight and three-way swivel with a crank bait. Drop these into the deep holes.
This is where you will find the walleye heading upstream to the spawning beds if you don't find any in other parts of the river.
You should also remember that each river is different as far as baits are concerned as well. One may catch them on a crank bait another twisters or soft baits. Still another you will need to use a jig and small minnow. Even the colors will need to be tested.
Just remember to have along different baits for different water conditions as well as for location differences.
