How to Build a Bookkeeping Business

If you are about to start a bookkeeping business or are thinking about it then you may well be considering the kind of service you will provide either working from home with the actual documents or working on location. You can use both paper books and the more modern electronic version allowing you and the customer some flexibility. New technology has allowed the bookkeeper a new way to start a business with a slight difference to the old fashioned style of visiting the customer's site to work.

In the past bookkeepers would need to travel to the site of various customers to get hold of there documents before working through them and leaving. The new technology now allows you to work from home making things a lot more flexible.

Couriers and the post can be used to get source documents from the customer to the bookkeeper or with customers who are near by they can be collected so work can take place at the bookkeeper's home. The work can be done electronically before a file can be sent to the customer with the results. This could be in the form of a financial summary.

With some systems you can save the files so that they can be accessed remotely. It is also a possibility that smaller companies do not need to see there accounts so frequently so a paper copy can simply be posted while you hold on to the electronic copy. If this is the case copies should be made and backups taken.

Some clients are not yet have computer technology so you will need to print reports out to give to them. If this is the case you may have to set them up from scratch electronically when you first take them on as a client. You can set them up with a license so they can easily access them but that could be an extra cost they do not want to incur.

Online software does have some great advantages. The first one is that clients can log on and see the situation at any time and view the progress you are making. It is also easier for the results to be sent as they can generate the reports themselves. You can also both view the results at the same time and discuss matters on the phone while you do so. It creates a very flexible bookkeeping system. This is a particularly good idea for those who take a very keen interest in their accounts.

It is a fact of life that if you get a number of clients they will all want things done in different ways so flexibility in your approach is key. As things change in the world of technology your options will as well. It is up to you to offer as many options as possible to help you get clients. Ultimately in a day and age when money is tight getting a flexible bookkeeper for only the hours that are needed and one that is working in the most efficient way will be an attractive idea for all concerned.
