Being a good dinner host involves a lot of aspects, and there is no one thing that can be advised to make sure that your dinner party goes well. This is unfortunate, but it is possible to give some guidelines about the kind of things that will ensure that you stand out as a good host and your guests will have an enjoyable evening.
The first thing is, of course, to know your guests. I do not mean this in the sense that you know who they are, as this would be hoped for if you are entertaining them for dinner, what was meant is that you need to know any personal preferences the diner has. Are they a vegetarian? If so, do you know how to cater for this or will you need to look it up? It is extremely important to find out if they have any allergies before hand, as this could potentially lead to a lot of problems if you find out they do when they arrive. You don't want to have prepared a full salad and a pizza, and then find out your guest cannot eat tomato.
Similarly, you need to check if there are any foods they do not like. Yes, you may get polite guests who eat what they are given anyway, but you would obviously prefer that they enjoyed their meal. After these important points are considered it should be easy to construct a menu for the evening. So then, the next important thing is to focus on the night.
Make sure your home is clean, tidy and comfortable. Kick out any pets who may make smells or leave hair around, make sure the kids are not let into the dining room to make a mess in the few hours before the meal, and just be generally prepared. Set the table in a way that will make it easy for you to serve your courses, and make sure all of your dinner service is matching. The little details are important in making sure you come across as a good host.
Other than that, be polite and accommodating to your guests. Get their favourite wine in so they can have a glass, and make sure you have thought of some topics of conversation. Nothing is worse than a stony silence around the dinner table. Try and pick up on elements your guests will have in common, so they have something to talk about. Having some form of entertainment, whether a fun game, a piece of music you want to show them, or even some new artwork you can all discuss, is also good to make sure your guests do not get bored.
All in all, just make sure you are well prepared and can give them a good all rounded night including food, entertainment and an after dinner drink. It is easy to be nervous, but perhaps trial run your recipes before hand, and make sure you can prepare as much as you can in advance, so you are not stuck in the kitchen all night. Then just enjoy yourself: if you have fun, your guests will too.
