How to Avoid Virus Infections

Some viruses are noticeable to the user depending on their behavior, but many of them are masked or simply do nothing to call attention to themselves. For instance many viruses are attached to executable files and if a user attempts to open an infected program, the virus' code will be executed automatically. An infected computer won't work properly due to complete system failure.

Maybe you don't know that keeping safe your computer takes more than just installing an antivirus or antispyware program. If you like browsing through Internet, checking your email, watching videos and listening to music you should know how dangerous the Internet can be for you and your computer. We will now list some of helpful tips which will help you to avoid virus infections.

These kind of websites usually have many suspicious popup windows and applications that upload automatically without our knowledge. There are so many other websites that do just like this.
  • Do not click unsolicited links on your email or IM window because malicious links usually are spread out via email or IM services. Avoid clicking links if you do not know who the sender is.
  • Avoid using file sharing or file transfer wizards if your computer is not fully protected, because there is no guarantee that the file you are attempting to access are virus free.
  • Do not use Adobe Reader / Acrobat with default settings because some of viruses are spread out via adobe product vulnerabilities. You should stay up-to-date with the latest version of adobe reader and configure the default settings in this way:

  1. Open Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat

  7. Uncheck the box Display PDF in browser
  8. Click OK and close the program.

  • Turn off 'autorun' function for all removable media drives (flash disk, pen drive, etc). Nowadays "autorun virus" is a very common virus that can infect desktop computers, laptops and removable media drives. Basically, the virus will create a set of new files whenever you insert removable media into your PC. After that the media drive will be automatically explored by your Windows Explorer so the virus code will be executed simultaneously. The autorun virus can cause major problems for your system unless you remove them quickly. For this reason it is better to leave autorun function disabled.
